JAZZ SEMICONDUCTOR BECOMES FIRST U.S. SEMICONDUCTOR COMPANY
TO ACHIEVE INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATION FOR INFORMATION SECURITY
Attainment of ISO/IEC 27001:2005 Standard Signifies Company's
Dedication to Adopting Highest Standards Available for Securing
Customer Information and Intellectual Property
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., September 6, 2006
-- Jazz Semiconductor, an independent wafer foundry focused primarily
on specialty CMOS process technologies, today announced that it
is the first semiconductor company in the U.S. to achieve certification
to ISO/IEC 27001:2005, the new global information security standard.
The standard was adopted by the International Organization for Standardization
(ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on October
15, 2005 and replaces the previous British Standard, BS 7799 Part
2. The ISO/IEC 27001:2005 standard is the requirements specification
that is designed to enable businesses and organizations throughout
the world to develop a best-in-class information security management
system (ISMS).
With the globalization of the semiconductor industry, there is
an increasing amount of information transferred through physical
and electronic media. Information may be at risk from any number
of threats and is no longer exclusively an IT concern. Breaches
of information security can cost organizations a significant amount
of money while causing irreparable image and reputation damage.
Managing this risk effectively allows the semiconductor industry
to expand internationally by helping alleviate concerns about the
treatment of proprietary information. The creation and adoption
of the ISO 27001 standard is a structured approach to managing information
security that provides a framework to accomplish the goal of reducing
security breaches.
The new ISO 27001 standard encompasses the security of all types
of information in whatever form it may be held, used or communicated.
This includes information security policies, computer infrastructures,
remote access for mobile users, authentication controls, information
encryption and storage, back-ups, personnel and physical security.
Attainment of ISO 27001 certification is only awarded to companies
that can demonstrate high levels of competency in information security
management. Jazz achieved ISO 27001 certification in five months.
To date, there are only eleven other organizations nationwide that
have achieved the new standard and Jazz is the only U.S. semiconductor
company.
"Information security is vital to every business. We are proud
to achieve ISO 27001, an important benchmark that assures our customers,
partners and suppliers that we are dedicated to protecting and preserving
the integrity of their intellectual property," said Bala Govender,
chief information officer and vice president of quality and information
technology.
In addition to ISO 27001:2005, Jazz has achieved certifications
for ISO 9001:2000 (Quality Management Systems) and ISO 14001:2004
(Environmental Management Systems) and has integrated the three
management systems: quality, environmental and information security
to ensure compliance and continuous improvement across the organization.
About ISO/IEC 27001:2005
ISO 27001:2005 is a standard that establishes requirements for an
information security management system (ISMS), and outlines the
rules for defining, establishing, implementing, operating, reviewing,
monitoring, maintaining and improving a documented ISMS within the
context of an organization's overall business risks. The standard
is designed to ensure the selection of adequate and proportionate
security controls that protect information assets and give confidence
to interested parties including an organization's customers.
ISO 27001:2005 is the first in a family of international information
security standards that will protect IT worldwide over the next
decade. ISO 27001 is designed to harmonize with ISO 9001:2000 and
ISO 14001:2004 so that management systems can be effectively integrated.
It implements the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) model and reflects the
principles of the 2002 Organization for Economic Cooperation and
Development (OECD) guidance on the security of information systems
and networks.
